Symmetry Perception and Psychedelic Experience

چکیده
This review of symmetry perception has six parts. Psychophysical studies have investigated for over 100 years (part 1). Neuroscientific on accumulated in the last 20 years. Functional MRI and EEG experiments conclusively shown that regular visual arrangements, such as reflectional symmetry, Glass patterns, 17 wallpaper groups all activate extrastriate cortex. activation generates an event-related potential (ERP) called sustained posterior negativity (SPN). SPN amplitude scales with degree regularity display, is generated whether participants attend to or not 2). It likely some forms are detected automatically, unconsciously, pre-attentively 3). might be brain hardwired detect 4), this could contribute its aesthetic appeal 5). Visual fractal geometry prominent hallucinations induced by psychedelic drug N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT), flicker 6). Integrating what we know about processing features a new frontier neuroscience. We propose cortex can generate aesthetically fascinating symmetrical representations spontaneously, absence external stimuli.

A Psychedelic Experience - Fact or Fantasy
Since at least 1500 B.C. men have, from time to time, held the view that our normal vision of the world is a hallucination—a dream, a figment of the mind, or, to use the Hindu word which means both art and illusion, a maya. The implication is that, if this is so, life need never be taken seriously. It is a fantasy, a play, a drama to be enjoyed. It does not really matter, for one day (perhaps i...
متن کاملSymmetry perception
Detection of (mirror) symmetry which is abundantly present in the world is often assumed to be an integral part of the perceptual organization process that is applied to every visual stimulus. On the one hand, as reviewed in this article, the exact role of symmetry in perceptual organization is actually rather elusive due to its interaction with other grouping factors. On the other hand, the de...
متن کاملEnhanced repertoire of brain dynamical states during the psychedelic experience.
The study of rapid changes in brain dynamics and functional connectivity (FC) is of increasing interest in neuroimaging. Brain states departing from normal waking consciousness are expected to be accompanied by alterations in the aforementioned dynamics. In particular, the psychedelic experience produced by psilocybin (a substance found in "magic mushrooms") is characterized by unconstrained co...
متن کاملPsychedelic States and Schizophrenia
As long as a man can talk to himself about himself, he retains some sense of personal identity and separateness. Once he stops talking (self-reflective thinking) and begins to listen "to the song going on within him," all boundaries, internal and external, cease to exist—including the internal-external boundary itself. In some cases, this state is experienced or interpreted as psychotic death; ...
متن کاملExperience and Perception
To what extent can experience shape perception? In what ways does perception vary across people or even within the same person at different times? This thesis presents three lines of research examining the role of experience on perception. The first section presents evidence from synesthesia suggesting that learning can influence letter-synesthesia pairings and that associative learning can aff...
